Sorting it Out and Lip Reading
Sorting It Out and Lip Reading are choose-your-own-adventure flowcharts that outline a deaf person's complex strategies to understand spoken language. Mapping the circular, obstructed, and sometimes comical paths to try and understand speakers, the flowcharts reveal the active process of decoding, guesswork, and meaning-making. This set includes the flowcharts as exhibited, along with an accessibility experiment that translates this experience into a screen-reader-friendly format for the web.

Lip Reading - Interactive Flowchart
The “Lip Reading” flowchart was displayed as part of Ting’s work at the E.A.A.T. exhibit as a large poster mounted on the wall. The flowchart is an interactive visual by nature, prompting users to make choices based on existing information, past actions, and feedback as they move through the flowchart.
To bring the flowchart from the in-person E.A.A.T. experience into an interactive online format, we created an online interactive HTML version of the flowchart, where blind/low-vision users can use screenreaders to navigate each step of the flowchart, simulating the experience that sighted users have with the original.

Sorting it Out, 2023
Lip Reading, 2023
As schemas of the complex, rapid-fire set of decisions the artist makes to decipher oral communication, these tongue-in-cheek flowcharts render listening as a visual process that activates forking paths of meaning.
Sorting it Out: This is the first in a series of choose-your-own adventure flowcharts that satirically represents audiovisual strategies of listening from the perspective of a deaf person. It tracks the feedback loops of sense and meaning-making; how, at times, outrageous, self-deprecating, or embarrassing strategies are required to understand speakers. Please note this flowchart is sprawling; there are multiple permutations of possible scenarios.
Lip Reading: This is the second in a series of choose-your-own adventure flowcharts that pokes fun at the complex schema and strategies required to decipher spoken language through lip reading. It tracks the circuitous, obstructed, lateral, and sometimes comical pathways to understanding. Please note there are multiple permutations of possible scenarios: no one path is the same.
